SISCA

This is a healthcare app designed specifically for international students at Seneca Polytechnic. Recognizing that international students often face difficulties and challenges when it comes to visiting hospitals compared to domestic students, the aim of this mobile application UX/UI case study is to provide a convenient service for students to easily schedule clinic appointments.

This project is a school project of Seneca Polytechnic's Interactive Media Design Program. The objective is to conduct research to ascertain the needs of Seneca Polytechnic students and subsequently develop an app tailored to those needs.

Project overview

This project focuses on the development of a dedicated healthcare application tailored for international students enrolled at Seneca. Understanding the unique challenges and apprehensions international students may face when accessing medical services compared to their domestic counterparts, the app aims to alleviate these concerns by providing a user-friendly platform for scheduling clinic appointments.

The Problem

The primary problem addressed in this project is the unique challenges and apprehensions that international students face when accessing medical services compared to their domestic counterparts. International students may find it more difficult to visit hospitals compared to domestic students, and to address this issue, the app aims to provide a user-friendly platform for scheduling clinic appointments.

The Goal

01.  Enhance accessibility to medical services for international students.

02. Simplify the process of scheduling clinic appointments.

03. Reduce anxiety and provide reassurance to students regarding medical services.

My Role

As a UX/UI designer, I developed a healthcare app specifically designed for international students at Seneca College. This app aimed to provide a convenient service for students to easily schedule clinic appointments, recognizing that visiting hospitals could be daunting and challenging for international students compared to domestic ones.

User Research

Based on interviews conducted with approximately 9 students attending Seneca Polytechnic, I have provided solutions.

Interview Questions

01. How do you currently make hospital appointments as an international student?
02. What difficulties do you encounter when making hospital appointments?
03. What support or information do you feel is necessary for international students to make hospital appointments?
04. Do you have any thoughts on using a mobile app for hospital appointment scheduling? If so, what are they?
05. What features do you believe are essential in a hospital appointment scheduling app for international students?
06. Are there any specific information or services you would like to receive through a hospital appointment scheduling app?
07. How do you envision the design of a hospital appointment scheduling app for international students?

User Quotes

Based on the answers from user interviews, I quote some of the important statements.

Currently, I make hospital appointments by visiting or calling the student health services department at my school. The difficulties I encounter when making hospital appointments include language barriers and communication issues, especially when making appointments over the phone.

I believe international students would benefit from additional support or information regarding the hospital appointment process, such as guidance on how to navigate the healthcare system in a foreign country.

I think using a mobile app for hospital appointment scheduling would be very convenient. A simple interface where I can select preferred time slots and physicians for appointments would be particularly helpful.

Pain Points

Here are some pain points that international students may encounter when accessing medical services:

01. Language and cultural barriers

International students often face language and cultural barriers when visiting hospitals and accessing medical services. They may experience confusion due to a lack of understanding of medical terminology and procedures.

02. Difficulty in scheduling appointments

International students may find it complex and challenging to schedule appointments in a new country. They may struggle to understand the reservation methods and procedures, making it difficult to efficiently book appointments.

03. Anxiety about the healthcare system

International students may feel anxious about navigating a healthcare system different from their home country's. Uncertainty about accessing medical services can make it challenging for them to address health issues.

04. High costs

International students often have to pay high fees for healthcare services, and lack of insurance coverage can result in additional expenses.

Solution

Based on the pain points identified, I have provided solutions.

01. Simplification of the appointment scheduling system

The healthcare app streamlines the appointment scheduling process and makes it intuitive, enabling international students to easily book appointments. For example, it provides a simple interface where users can select preferred time slots and physicians and make reservations effortlessly.

02. Personal health condition checking

Offer resources within the app for international students to check their personal health conditions, such as symptom checkers, health assessment tools, and information on common health concerns.

03. Easy accessibility and convenience

The healthcare app offers a mobile-friendly and user-friendly interface for easy access. Additionally, it includes various features to make reserving and managing healthcare services convenient for users.

Reflections

This project marked my first group project undertaken shortly after entering college. At the time, it was initiated in the first semester without a complete understanding of the concept of UX. However, through this project, I gained fresh insights into how user research is conducted and how User Interface design is executed. This experience enabled me to grasp the fundamental principles of UX/UI design and fueled my passion for a user-centric approach.
